Description

Concerto for Band, composed in the fall of 1971, was premiered in March, 1972 at the Mid-East Instrumental Music Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The three movement work offers many musical styles through its twelve-minute duration. The first movement provides a solid beginning, through a traditional theme and development approach. In the second movement, individual talent is showcased through a series of lyrical solos. Quartal harmony and whole tone scales bring the piece to a fiery, climatic ending. Concerto for Band, as the composer puts it, “was written from the front row seat of the concert hall…”

This the following comment:

“…it is definitely a ‘crowd pleaser’ and a piece which band members are thrilled with playing; but more, it provides a sensitive and memorable music experience. The Concerto for Band is playable by a strong high school band, is a welcome addition to the band literature, and I recommend it highly.”

Dr. George A. Cavanagh, Conductor
UAH Wind Ensemble
